The town was settled by Europeans in 1661 as Nemasket and later changed to Middlebury. In 1669, it officially incorporated as Middleborough. Nemasket means place of fish due to the large amount of herring that migrate up the river each spring, and he names Middlebury and Middleborough are derived from the city of Middelburg, Zeeland.
